Proper care of your braces is an important step in the process of giving you that fantastic smile you want to have. You will be shown the proper care of your braces when your orthodontic treatment begins.
Effective cleaning of your mouth is important every time you eat, especially during orthodontic treatment. Braces can make cleaning your teeth more difficult, so making sure food does not get trapped in the wiring of your braces is key. If food is allowed to collect in the wiring of your braces, it can lead to bad breath, tooth decay, and gum infection. That’s something our dental team wants you to avoid.
The best way to keep your teeth and braces clean is to brush 3-5 times per day.
Make sure you brush back and forth across and between the wires and gums on the upper and lower sides to loosen any food particles. Next, brush your teeth, just as if you had no brackets or appliances. Put your toothbrush bristles at a 45-degree angle to your gums and brush with a circular motion. Brush two to three teeth at a time for ten strokes then move on. Repeat this on the inside of your teeth and then repeat the entire process on your bottom teeth.
Using a mirror can aid you in making sure you don’t miss any food particles or plaque buildup. Also, don’t forget to floss. You should be flossing at least once per day to ensure healthy teeth and gums.
Implementing these simple tips will ensure you have a healthy mouth, a happy smile, and that your braces and teeth stay clean. Contact us today for more tips.
